Duke began its campaign with a 17-3 win over Tulane last Saturday. Running back Nate Sheppard carried the ball 35 times for 227 yards and two touchdowns. Quarterback Walker Eget, a San Jose State transfer, struggled in the outing, completing just 13 of 26 passes for 131 yards. His leading pass-catcher was Jonah Burton, who caught three passes for 38 yards. Duke had to scramble to replace star quarterback Daria Mensah, who transferred to the University of Miami this summer, and landed on Eget as their new signal-caller.
Illinois, meanwhile, opened its season with an impressive 42-23 win over UAB. Quarterback Katin Houser had a great game, connecting on 13 of 27 passes for 182 yards and three touchdowns. Running back Ca'Lil Valentine carried the ball 11 times for 88 yards and scored a touchdown himself, while Collin Dixon caught six passes for 70 yards and two touchdowns.
